Amber ales range in color from amber to deep red hues. This style of beer tends to focus on malty flavors, and generally the hop bitterness is modest, though few examples are particularly hoppy. Expect a balanced beer with toasted malt notes and a light fruitiness.
Brown ales range in color from deep amber to dark brown and often suggest flavors of caramel and chocolate, vary in sweetness and alcohol levels, and contain moderate bitterness. English brown ales tend to be strong, malty, and often nutty, while those from the U.S. are drier with slight bitterness and citrus accents.
German dark lagers include dunkels, Oktoberfest, bock and dopplebock. Oktoberfests are typically malty, lightly nutty, somewhat toasty and yeasty, but with a clean finish (unlike the heavier English brown ale). Bock and dopplebock simply indicates strong or extra-potent lager.
